Eco Thermostat

Tips to reduce your heating costs

Thermostat settings

  • Radiators in the room where the thermostat is located must be fully open. The temperature of that room will be regulated by the thermostat.
  • The room thermostat should be placed at approximately 1.5m height and not too close to a radiator. Likewise, avoid placing it directly opposite a heat-radiating source.
  • Lowering the thermostat temperature from 20°C to 19°C saves on average 7% on your heating fuel.
  • A slightly cooler thermostat setting is more bearable in the evening than in the morning. A good jumper also saves on heating bills ;-)
  • Don't hesitate to lower the temperature in rooms that are used less frequently (utility room, spare bedroom, etc.)

Insulation

  • Insulating exposed heating and hot water pipes can lead to substantial savings.
  • Install insulating and reflective sheets behind radiators (especially those on exterior walls). This avoids heating the wall itself and improves how quickly rooms warm up.
  • Place draught excluders between cold rooms (such as the garage, shed, etc.) and heated rooms.
  • Close curtains and shutters at night — they help retain heat inside the house.

Other tips

  • Do not cover convection radiators. This greatly reduces their efficiency and your comfort.
  • Have your boiler serviced annually (mandatory in many countries and often tax-deductible).
  • Extractor hoods expel a large amount of warm air when running. Use them only when necessary.
